The Benefits of Bilingualism

Whether your child is learning English alongside another language, or you’re considering introducing a new one, rest assured: exposure to multiple languages is a gift. Every story, song, and conversation helps your child’s brain grow stronger, more flexible, and more connected to the world around them.

At The Speech & Language Center, we often talk with families who speak more than one language at home — and sometimes, they wonder if that could confuse their child or delay speech development. The truth is: being bilingual doesn’t hinder language skills — it strengthens them!

The benefits of bilingualism go far beyond communication. The brain of a bilingual child is constantly practicing flexibility — switching between languages, organizing sounds, and choosing words depending on the situation. These “mental workouts” build the foundation for strong executive functioning skills, such as attention, memory, and problem-solving.

Here are just a few of the ways bilingualism supports development:

Cognitive Flexibility:
Children who grow up hearing or speaking more than one language learn to shift between linguistic systems, which strengthens working memory and adaptability.

Language Awareness:
Bilingual children become more attuned to how language works — noticing patterns, grammar, and sounds more easily. This often supports early reading and writing skills.

Communication & Connection:
Speaking multiple languages expands a child’s ability to connect with more people and cultures, helping build empathy and social awareness.

Cultural Identity:
For many families, maintaining multiple languages allows children to stay connected to their heritage and loved ones — a deeply meaningful part of who they are.

A note on developmental milestones for these kids: Kids who are growing up learning two language may meet developmental language milestones later than children learning just one language and this is OK! They will progress and “catch up” and have even stronger speech and language skills in the long run.

We’re proud to have our very own bilingual SLP, Rebecca Bulgarelli, M.A., CCC-SLP, on our team! Rebecca brings not only her professional expertise but also her lived experience navigating and learning multiple languages. This makes her work with bilingual families incredibly special — she understands both the linguistic science and the real-world dynamics of raising bilingual children.
