The Hidden Costs of “Free” Therapy
We want to help you understand what you’re getting and how the services we provide are different.
Many families are told that therapy is “free”—through insurance, school programs, or other services. While these options can provide valuable support, it’s important to understand that “free” doesn’t always mean there are no trade-offs.
Understanding the limitations of “free” therapy doesn’t mean that all private therapy is better or that insurance-based services aren’t valuable. It simply helps families choose the best option based on their goals, needs, and desired pace of progress.
At The Speech & Language Center, we’ve found that understanding these hidden costs can help families make more informed decisions about the type of therapy that best meets their needs.
Many insurance- or school-based programs come with limits on:
Session length (often 30 minutes)
Number of visits
Which goals are covered
Time for parent or caregiver coaching
These limits aren’t about the therapist or the client—they’re built into the system.
At The Speech & Language Center, we structure most sessions for 60 minutes so we can focus on the person, not the policy. Longer sessions allow us to:
Address multiple, connected goals
Work on all the areas of need this could include language, executive functioning, cognition, and social communication
Embed skills into real-life practice
Provide family education and coaching
Allow a real relationship to build between client and clinician
This approach works for children, teens, and adults, ensuring therapy is individualized, flexible, and meaningful.
Meaningful progress takes time, attention, flexibility, and connection. That’s why families who choose private therapy often see not just skill growth, but increased confidence and independence—beyond the therapy room. If you are concerned with the covered services you or your loved one is receiving, reach out to us. We would love to discuss more options with you.
